Northampton Town v Posh

Posh were beaten 1-0 by local rivals Northampton Town at Sixfields on Saturday afternoon.

A late freak goal by Mitch Pinnock earned Northampton Town all three points in the Nene derby at Sixfields as Peterborough United suffered defeat in League One for the first time this season.

Joel Randall had the first effort of the game inside the opening two minutes, but his left-footed effort went well wide of the target. Moments later, he had another chance after Max Thompson failed to control a back-pass allowing Jonson Clarke-Harris to nip in, but the former Exeter man skied his effort after a cut-back from the Posh number nine.

Randall glanced a Harrison Burrows centre wide of the target on eight minutes as Posh continued to create the early opportunities on a blustery day at Sixfields. Archie Collins became the first player to be booked for a shirt tug on 16 minutes as referee Martin Woods got his first taste of the action.

Kioso fired over from 25-yards with an awkward volley after good composure in a tight area from Posh in the midfield area. Nicholas Bilokapic was called upon to make his first save of the afternoon on 27 minutes as he got down well to push a Kieron Bowie shot around the post after a rare wayward pass from Edwards out of defence.

Poku fired well over the bar after showing good close control to shift the ball into a bit of space on 32 minutes. Poku did better moments later after collecting a cross-field pass from Mason-Clark, driving into the box, twisting and turning past the defender, but his shot was deflected wide of the target by Sherring.

Thompson was well placed to keep out a curler from Mason-Clark two minutes into the second half after he did well to cut inside onto his right-foot. Posh had the ball in the back of the net on 57 minutes as Poku’s cross was turned in at the back post by Mason-Clark, but the former Barnet man was in an offside position and the goal was chalked off.

Mason-Clark had a good opportunity to find the breakthrough on 64 minutes after he was picked out by Burrows in the box, but he dragged his left-foot shot well wide.  Kioso was cautioned for a foul on 81 minutes as the Cobblers began to get on top in proceedings.

On 89 minutes, the home side got their noses in front in very speculative fashion, PINNOCK hooking a volley forward, it caught the wind, Bilokapic thought he had kept it out but the assistant referee, who in truth was nowhere near the goal-line gave the goal.
