Jimmy Unwin

Josh Gordon’s early strike was all the separated the two sides as Posh Under 18s fell to defeat to Coventry City at the idverde Training Ground.

Jimmy Unwin fielded a rotated side from the one that defeated Luton Town last time out; stints with the Under 21s in midweek meant that Noah Freeman, Eddie Fox and Joe Davies all made way for Fabian Claxton, Tom Unwin and Benjamin McWilliams-Marcano.

The visitors found themselves ahead early when Josh Gordon bundled the ball home from a set-piece routine.

Posh responded well to the early setback and fashioned an opportunity minutes later when Lucca Mendonca met George Holley’s delivery, but his headed attempt came inches away from an instant reply.

A minute later and it was Posh who created another opportunity after Patryk Sykut’s strike was beaten away to Benjamin McWilliams-Marcano who then had his attempt blocked by the Coventry defence.

Josh Stidder then came close down the other end, but couldn’t keep his effort down on the half-hour mark.

Bolu Shofowoke flashed an effort across the face of goal not long after, this time Luis Lines was on hand to keep out the frontman.

The second period was more scrappy and lacked many notable clear-cut opportunities, but Noah Freeman did well on 70minutes when the substitute excellently denied Coventry what looked like a certain second with a fine tackle.

Conrad Ambursley came close minutes later when his driven effort was beaten away by Westcott, but Posh was quick to move the ball out from defence and created an opportunity for McWilliams-Marcano who was denied by a smart save from Lines when the ball was flicked on to him at the back post.

From then, the match started to liven up as Ben Blakely struck the woodwork with a cushioned effort inside the Posh penalty area.

Much to the story of the afternoon, Posh were denied a leveller late on when Lines pulled off a superb double save to ensure his side all three points.
