Posh Women celebrate

Posh Women remain undefeated so far this season as they secured a late 4-3 win over Notts County Women thanks to Wilshaw’s winning strike at Coronation Park.

It was a rollercoaster game for Peterborough United Women on Sunday afternoon as they secured three points, thanks to a brace from Lauren Wilshaw, a back-post header from Evie Driscoll-King and Renai Bennett’s successful spot-kick.

It was a lively start for Posh with an early chance from a corner, but Driscoll-King’s header went just wide of the far post.

The hosts soon grew into the game with an early goal from BARNES who hooked an effort into the back of the net amongst a crowded box on nine minutes.

The Magpies continued to threaten and doubled their lead after a mistake at the back allowed RUSSELL to snatch the ball and slot it past Corry on 18 minutes.

Soon after, Wilshaw caused problems for the Magpies and sent a chance from the edge of the box, but her shot hit the bar.

Notts County netted a third on 39 minutes after Russell forced Corry into blocking her effort,  leaving MCHAMILTON to tap into the empty net.

Before the break, it was WILSHAW who bagged the first goal for Posh to cut the deficit on 42 minutes, as she curled in a great goal from the edge of the box.

After some half-time changes, Jake Poole’s side settled and claimed another goal on 53 minutes thanks to DRISCOLL-KING heading home at the back post from Wilshaw’s free-kick.

Shortly after, Bennett saw her chance from distance find the top netting before Corry parried away a vital strike from the hosts.

Both sides brought more energy into the second-half with the Magpies keeper saving a low strike from Bennett, before blocking a promising corner ball in from Wilshaw.

On 79 minutes Posh were awarded a penalty after Dawbarn was fouled in the box and it was BENNETT who once again stepped up to equalise from the spot for her team.

Down the other end of the pitch, Driscoll-King displayed some vital defensive work and headed the ball away on the goal-line, to deny the hosts the lead on 82 minutes.

The roller coaster continued into the 86th minute with Perkins working hard inside the box to find WILSHAW, whose strike deflected off the host’s defender and into the net to claim the winner.

Posh Women will look to extend their undefeated run as they welcome Burton Albion Women to Deeping Rangers FC next Sunday afternoon (2pm) in the Third Round Qualifying tie of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

Posh: Corry, Connor (sub Osker 46min), Dawbarn, Driscoll-King, Sharpe (sub O’Neill 82min), Middleton (sub Bale 46min), Brown (sub Lawlor 46min), Perkins, Reynolds, Wilshaw, Bennett.
