Tomlin Hat-Trick As Posh Hammer Royals
Peterborough United produced a stunning 6-0 win over Championship side Reading at London Road with Britt Assombalonga continuing his unbelievable start to the season and Lee Tomlin scoring a hat-trick.It didn't take long for Posh to open the scoring as a glorious pass from Tomlin picked out the in-form Britt ASSOMBALONGA who cut inside and drilled a low shot past goalkeeper Federici at the near post.
Barnett tested the goalkeeper with a fine volley before Assombalonga was denied a second by a sprawling save from overworked goalkeeper.
Olejnik denied Le Fondre as Reading came back into proceedings in a very open start to the cup tie. Assombalonga headed a Tomlin free-kick wide of the target as Akpan was cautioned.
It was 2-0 to the hosts on 19 minutes as Assombalonga picked out Lee TOMLIN, he was close to 30-yards and as the ball sat up he smacked an unstoppable volley past Federici and into the back of the net.
Incredibly, it was 3-0 to Posh on 27 minutes as Olejnik bowled the ball to SWANSON, he was comfortably in his own half with nobody near him, he ran at the defence, beat three defenders and swept the ball into the top corner past Federici. An incredible goal.
Federici produced a fine stop to deny a clipped free-kick from Tomlin as Posh continued to dominate. Olejnik produced a stunning stop to deny Robson-Kanu on 43 minutes following a right-wing corner.
On 54 minutes, Posh made it 4-0 as the hapless Gorkks brought down Assombalonga in the box and TOMLIN stepped up to convert past goalkeeper Federici for his second goal of the evening.
Swanson was superbly denied by Federici after another magic run as Posh pressed for a fifth goal. Mariappa headed into the side-netting before Le Fondre was denied by Olejnik.
Assombalonga fired over after excellent approach play from Tomlin and Barnett before Robson-Kanu fired over at the other end.
On 79 minutes, Posh made it 5-0 as Barnett was upended by Cummings and TOMLIN stepped up to coolly convert to complete his hat-trick.
Tomlin, Rowe and Assombalonga were replaced by Jermaine Anderson, Jaanai Gordon and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. The rout was complete in stoppage time as Jack PAYNE drilled home from fully 30-yards, moments after Mendez-Laing had struck the bar.
