Maddison Stunner Settles Tykes Tussle
Marcus Maddison added another superb goal to his collection as his stunning free-kick earned Peterborough United a 2-1 win over Barnsley at London Road.Barnsley goalkeeper Ross Turnbull did well to clear on three minutes after Conor Washington beat the offside trap as the match began in lively fashion.
Jack Payne volleyed miles over on six minutes after a corner from Taylor was only half cleared. The deadlock was broken on the quarter hour mark as a cross from the right was met by Devante COLE who hooked home a volley past goalkeeper Alnwick from eight-yards.
Hourihane fired into the side-netting before Conor Washington's left-foot strike struck the base of the post before being cleared for the fourth corner for Darren Ferguson's men.
Washington was denied at the near post by a smart stop from Turnbull after the Posh front man evaded the offside trap.
Burgess headed a Taylor corner kick over the bar on 33 minutes after a good run from Smith had won the set-piece.
Posh were forced into a change on 39 minutes with Burgess hobbling out of the action to be replaced by Ricardo Santos.
The hosts drew themselves just before the first half moved into stoppage time, Conor WASHINGTON continuing his fine form by firing an instinctive right-footed strike into the bottom corner from just inside the penalty area.
Turnbull pushed a cross-shot from Taylor away from danger on 50 minutes before Anderson saw a shot blocked. A good piece of individual skill from Smith on the hour mark saw him create a shooting opportunity for himself, but his controlled volley was saved.
On 64 minutes, a glorious pass from Payne sent Taylor away down the left, he took two touches and then fired low across Turnbull who made a smart stop before the loose ball was hacked clear for a corner.
A curler from Maddison went wide of the target moments later, the winger seeing his 30-yard effort drift just past the far post.
On 69 minutes, the Posh fans were on their feet and if you thought Marcus MADDISON's free kick against Oldham Athletic was stunning, you have not seen anything yet. The former Gateshead man struck an unbelievable strike from the dead ball situation into the top corner leaving Turnbull grasping at thin air.
On 77 minutes, the visitors were reduced to 10-men as Bailey was given his marching orders for a second booking after hauling down Maddison. Taylor sent the resulting free-kick over the bar. Taylor was then replaced by Kenny McEvoy.
Turnbull prevented an embarrassing own goal by Nyatanga with a fine sprawling save as Posh pushed to kill the contest. Maddison was denied a second with a fine stop from Turnbull before the referee brought an end to proceedings.
