Posh Dumped Out Of Capital One Cup
A much changed Charlton Athletic eased into round three of the Capital One Cup after a 4-1 victory over Peterborough United at the ABAX Stadium with the Championship side scoring arguably the goal of the night through Ahmed Kashi.Posh created chances in front of goal, but were wide open at the back and the visitors exposed the gaps all over the pitch and thoroughly deserved their passage into the next round of the competition.
Kieran Sadlier, making his first appearance for the club in competitive action, sent a speculative volley wide of the target in the early exchanges.
However, it was the Addicks who broke the deadlock as Alnwick spilled a routine cross and KENNEDY fired home the loose ball into the back of the net.
Alnwick denied Jordan Cousins on six minutes at the second attempt as the Championship club continued to cause problems.
Marcus Maddison was a whisker away from levelling on 11 minutes after making space on the left, his low drive drifting just past the far post.
Maddison floated a curler over the bar after good work from Jermaine Anderson and Jon Taylor moments later.
A good move involving Jack Collison and Conor Washington ended with the latter firing a shot just wide of the far upright on 17 minutes as Posh began to settle.
A superb raking pass from Almeida Santos picked out Maddison on 22 minutes, but his effort was deflected and comfortably gathered by Pope.
Marriott flashed a shot wide at the other end after the visitors caught Posh out on a counter attack.
Coulibaly fired over after an intelligent pass from Maddison moments later. Taylor showed good desire down the right on 37 minutes, beat two defenders, but his left-foot drive went wide.
Two minutes of added time was indicated by the fourth official, but there was nothing to report in those moments.
Posh made a change at half-time with Shaun Brisley replaced by Bostwick. Marriott fired over with his left-foot on 50 minutes while Almeida Santos got away with talking to by the referee after lunging in on Ba.
The Addicks doubled the lead on 53 minutes as Davey was adjudged to have given away a foul in the box on the stretch and AHEARNE-GRANT coolly converted the spot-kick.
Maddison side-footed wide of the target from 25-yards moments later after Taylor's cross was only half-cleared by the Addicks.
Harry Anderson replaced Sadlier just after the hour mark as Posh piled bodies forward in an attempt to get themselves back in the game.
Alnwick denied Ahearne-Grant with his legs after Charlton cut Posh open again with some slick passing. Kashi struck the base of the post and then Kennedy blazed over at the back post as Charlton squandered another chance to make it 3-0.
It was 3-0 on 77 minutes and given the chances the visitors have created and missed, it came as a bit of a surprise that this goal came out of nothing. Substitute KASHI scoring from just inside the Posh half, firing an unstoppable shot over Alnwick and into the net.
Kashi fired wide from 30-yards as Charlton again found plenty of space on the edge of the box. On 79 minutes, Washington was denied by goalkeeper Pope after racing onto an Anderson pass.
Maddison saw a free-kick beaten away on 84 minutes. Substitute VETOKELE made it 4-0 on 87 minutes as he tapped home from an in-swinging cross from Muldoon.
Posh did find a consolation goal as Jermaine ANDERSON nodded home a Maddison cross.
Collison fired wide deep into stoppage time and Washington was denied by Pope in the final moments as Posh exited the competition.
