Posh Claim Vital Away Win
It is incredible how football works. Last week, Christian Burgess was the villain of the piece as his error cost three points at Port Vale, but this week, his header from a Marcus Maddison corner earned a vital three points for Peterborough United.Posh boss Darren Ferguson made three changes to the starting line-up, the most notable of which came in terms of midfield with Jermaine Anderson in for Jack Payne. Michael Smith was handed the captaincy in Payne's absence.
Conor Washington saw an early effort deflect wide for a corner kick while Harry Beautyman headed wide as Posh started on the front foot.
The deadlock was broken on 13 minutes as Marcus MADDISON turned his man on the edge of the area and let fly, his effort was goalbound but took a huge deflection off Hayden Mullins and found the bottom corner of the net.
Alan Smith was booked for a foul on Christian Burgess on 23 minutes. Smith went through the back of Beautyman less than 60 seconds later and was lucky not to escape a second yellow card.
Burgess hooked a Newell corner kick wide of the target which Bostwick was superbly denied by Carroll, who tipped a header around the post. Carroll was then cautioned for dissent.
Scott Loach made a fine save to deny Bajner whose pace had seen him force his way into a one-v-one situation, Burgess was fortunate that he didn't connect with the striker or the referee would have had a decision to make.
Hayhurst curled a free-kick inches past the post after Bajner was upended on the edge of the box. Brisley was cautioned for his involvement.
On 40 minutes, the Magpies levelled the scores and it was a cracking volley from Gary THOMPSON who rifled a stunner in off the inside of the post past the despairing dive of Scott Loach.
On the stroke of half-time, Vassell missed his kick when well placed before Beautyman sliced wide from distance. Substitute Jones fired wide from distance on 48 minutes for the Magpies as Posh failed to clear.
Kyle Vassell dragged a left-foot shot wide of the near post on 53 minutes after a forceful run from Newell had created the opportunity. On 62 minutes, Posh got themselves back in front as an outswinging corner from Maddison was met by Christian BURGESS whose header found the back of the net via the inside of the post.
Posh made a double change on 75 minutes with Luke James and Erhun Oztmer replacing Maddison and Vassell. Loach denied a curler from substitute Murray as the game moved into four minutes of added time.
