Posh Suffer Heavy Home Defeat In Trophy
A hat-trick by 28-year-old Frenchman Tony Andreu helped Norwich City to a comprehensive 6-1 victory over a much changed Peterborough United XI at the ABAX Stadium.Only four players remained from the weekend win over Milton Keynes Dons, while boss Grant McCann also handed first senior appearances for young striker Deon Moore and 17-year-old Morgan Penfold.
Ryan Tafazolli completed 90 minutes on his comeback from injury, but there were few positives for Posh as the Canaries ran riot in the Checkatrade Trophy.
The visitors opened the scoring in the sixth minute as a long clearance forward following a Posh corner picked out Josh MURPHY one on one with Binnom-Williams, he beat the full back for pace and then finished coolly past Mark Tyler.
The Canaries doubled their advantage on eight minutes as a left-wing corner kick was allowed to reach ANDREU and he fired home low past Tyler and into the back of the net.
Ben Godfrey was cautioned for a crude tackle on Nabi a minute later by referee Dean Whitestone. Norwich made it 3-0 on 23 minutes as James MADDISON saw his 25-yard effort take a huge deflection and loop over Tyler and into the back of the net.
Tafazolli glanced a header wide of the target following an in-swinging Maddison set-piece on 26 minutes. Josh Murphy fired over from inside the box moments later, a real chance to make it 4-0.
Killip produced a decent stop to deny a curler from Coulthirsst on 42 minutes after a good switch of play from Chettle.
Killip did well to beat away an effort from Nichols in stoppage time, but there was still time for the young Canaries to add a fourth goal, ANDREU slotting home from 10-yards after an intelligent cut back from Toffolo.
Posh made a double change at the break with Leo Da Silva Lopes and Deon Moore introduced for Adil Nabi and Shaquile Coulthirst.
Posh reduced the arrears on 51 minutes and it was a well-worked effort, Moore showed good pace and awareness to bring in Chettle, he found Almeida Santos down the right and his superb cross was headed home from close-range by ANDERSON.
The Canaries restored their four goal cushion on 55 minutes as Toffolo got to the by-line and picked out 28-year-old ANDREU who completed his hat-trick with a close-range finish.
Da Silva Lopes was cautioned for a foul on 62 minutes and Maddison followed him into the book moments later. Nichols was denied by Killip on 66 minutes after a glorious ball forward by Binnom-Williams.
James Maddison was denied by goalkeeper Tyler on 70 minutes before manager Grant McCann made his final change, replacing Maddison with Morgan Penfold.
On 81 minutes, the Canaries made it 6-1 as MURPHY collected another Toffolo pass and stroked the ball into the far bottom corner.
Posh had a chance to reduce the arrears as Binnom-Williams was dragged down in the box by Ramsay, but Nichols saw his spot-kick well saved by Killip who guessed correctly diving to his left, making a decent stop.
