Two second half goals earn Posh Ladies success in the League Cup final.
The Peterborough United Ladies concluded an excellent campaign by lifting the League Cup following a deserved 2-0 success over local rivals Northampton Town at Raunds Football Club.
In front of a healthy crowd, both sides played some good football, but chances in the first half were at a premium with Posh goalkeeper Amy Martin doing well in the air at set-pieces.
Posh changed their set-up at the interval and with Tash Applegate as a central striker, began to cause problems for the Cobblers.
An Applegate free-kick was well dealt with by Cobblers keeper Daniels while at the other end, Martin did well to deal with a long-range effort by Marshall, grabbing the ball at the second attempt.
As the final entered the final 15 minutes, Applegate wasted a good chance to break the deadlock, but her volley from a corner kick cleared the crossbar.
However, moments later, there were great scenes as Jess HARVEY finished superbly in a one v one with the goalkeeper after persistence saw her burst into the area.
The final 10 minutes were nervy until right at the death, Posh added a second goal to seal the victory with APPLEGATE providing a stunning right-footed volley past a shell-shocked keeper following a deep ball into the box.
The cup success caps a remarkable first campaign for the Ladies who clinched promotion to the division above alongside their cup opponents, who clinched the title on goals scored on the final day of the domestic season.
