Boss Grant McCann talks about pre-season, the opening day and the role that the supporters can play.
We are very much looking forward to Saturday’s opening game with Plymouth Argyle at the ABAX Stadium. It has been a good pre-season, I think the squad is in good shape and the lads have a real togetherness in the group. Of course, as much as it is great to have that in pre-season, we are well aware that we need to take it into the season.
It is a tough start for us, we have 14 games in the space of the first two months and we know that we will have to start well. I feel that we have a good depth to our squad and if we have one or two injuries in the camp, we have players strong enough to come in.
As a manager, you are always desperate for the season to get underway, I have been chomping at the bit for the last couple of weeks and I know the players have been too. It has been three years or so since we last played our opening game of the season at home, so we are hoping the supporters come out and get behind the players.
I think you, the fans, can see that the group will work extremely hard for the shirt and I know that should be the bare minimum. I feel we have the quality to add to that work-rate, at the top end of the pitch it does feel like we have goals and Peterborough teams have always had that aspect to their game.
I think we scored 29 goals in pre-season, which is good for confidence, but we need to take that into the campaign. We will do all we can in the community and try and engage as much as we can with the fan base because we know that is vitally important.
We won’t get too high when we win and we won’t get too low when we don’t, we stay at a happy medium and if we can do that then hopefully we can have a good season. Myself, my management team and the players really appreciate your support and we will do all we can to entertain and produce football that you will enjoy seeing.
See you Saturday!
Grant
