Incredible game at the Mick George Training Academy as Posh Ladies secure a 5-4 victory.
It was impossible to understate the importance of this match, even so early into the league season. Two of the best footballing teams in the league last term and there was nothing so far this season to suggest otherwise.
Neither team were to disappoint, and a feast of football was to unravel before the watching eyes. All of this was preceded by a minute’s applause for Peterborough United club legend Tommy Robson.
The first real chance fell to Rotherham on six minutes when appeals for a penalty were given only for the referee to acknowledge the linesman’s flag for offside. On 12 minutes Posh’s best chance fell to Megan Parrett who cut inside but her shot cannoned off the post and went wide.
Excellent goalkeeping from Sophie Powell and her Rotherham counterpart was to become a feature of the game. It looked like being a scoreless first half, but on the stroke of half time, Keir PERKINS received the ball in midfield, drove forward and scored with an unstoppable left foot shot for the games opening goal.
On 52 minutes Posh doubled their lead when an excellent run from Megan Parrett saw her cross perfectly onto Donna McGuigan’s head and MCGUIGAN deftly headed past the keeper.
Just three minutes later Rotherham cut the lead but on 58 minutes the two-goal advantage was re-established as Kez Copeland slotted through a lovely ball to Hannah Pendred who found PERKINS to drive the ball into the top corner.
On 64 minutes Posh extended the lead further with their fourth; an excellent attacking move found DODWELL who hammered home.
Rotherham were not finished though. They clawed the game back to 4-3 before an Amy Challis corner on 87 minutes was superbly headed home by Holly LEWIS. Once again Rotherham rallied and pulled the game back to 5-4 from the penalty spot but time was to run out for them.
A scintillating game of end to end football with both teams giving there all in a wonderful advert for the women’s game.
Posh next travel to Woodlands Ladies on Sunday 25th October 2020 hoping to make it three wins on the bounce.
