Ladies open their National League campaign against Bedworth United on Sunday afternoon at The Oval.
It seems an incredibly long time since Peterborough United Women’s were last in competitive action, April in fact, but Chloe Brown’s side will embark on a new era for the club on Sunday afternoon as they begin life in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands, travelling to Bedworth United at The Oval (2pm).
This will be the Ladies highest step in the football pyramid since being founded in 2015, with the fixture also marking the first competitive game since falling under the football club umbrella in July as an exciting future lies ahead for the team.
The Ladies enjoyed a positive pre-season as they prepared for life in the National League, ending the programme with a ruthless 7-0 victory over St Ives and hope that can build momentum to start on a confident note on Sunday.
Posh have had to wait an extra week to get their season underway after Wem Town Ladies were forced to postpone the fixture last Sunday. Meanwhile, our opponents, Bedworth United, began their 2020/21 campaign against Boldmere St Michaels, falling to an 8-1 defeat at The Oval.
Team News
It has been a busy couple of weeks in terms of new signings for Posh, with five announced last week, including Cassie Steward and former player Jess Driscoll, who returns to the club after spells at a number of clubs. All recent additions will be available for selection on Sunday afternoon after featuring throughout pre-season.
Goalkeeper Sophie Powell will be unavailable for this weekend game, with Katie Cooper from the reserve side set to take her place in-between the sticks against Bedworth United.
From the Gaffer
“So excited to get started now, we have put the work in at training and in our pre-season matches, and now we just want to see the results in the league. I think everyone involved with the team is just keen to get started. The way we played against St Ives has set us up well for the start of the season and can only give players the confidence to go into Sunday and play their best.”
From the Captain
“Pre-season has gone well. It’s hard work and a lot of fitness; we’ve got new players in, and now it’s about adapting as we go into a higher league with tougher opposition, so plenty of hard work put in over the last month. Now, we’re just all very excited, it’s a new challenge, a big challenge, but National League is very big for us and a massive achievement, so we’re all looking forward to it and ready to get going.”
