Archie Collins

He might have been well travelled in the summer, but midfielder Archie Collins is back on familiar territory as he reflected on the first week of pre-season training.

There is always a little bit of trepidation around the first few days of pre-season training for footballers because they know what is coming.

Testing, running and in most circumstances, hot weather as the backdrop, but the British weather has come up trumps in the first week of July, providing the first team group at Peterborough United with welcome conditions to complete their work.

For midfielder Archie Collins, after a summer of rest and recuperation, as well as ticking a few new destinations off the bucket list, he is back and raring to go.

"I think you know what to expect in the first few days of pre-season training, you know you are going to have to do plenty of running, but last week was nice because they eased us in gradually.

"It was good to blow the cobwebs off and get going! I enjoyed my summer and I think it was needed if I am honest because last season was testing both physically and mentally. We played a lot of games and it was gruelling on the body, but it was also tough on the mind, so to be able to go away, completely switch off from football was really important.

"Whilst that time away was great, it was nice to walk through the door on the first day and see everybody again because you see so much of each other in a season. It is good to see some fresh faces as well, I am sure they will help the group moving forward.

"Last season we were able to create a really good team spirit, the group were tight, we were all mates off the pitch as well as on it and that is the challenge for this season, to do the same again," Collins said.

Posh travel to Spain on Sunday for a week-long training camp with a fixture against AFC Wimbledon scheduled for the Friday evening.

The first pre-season friendly in this country will be at Spalding United on Tuesday 16th July (7.45pm). Tickets will go on sale shortly for the only home fixture of the friendly calendar, with Notts County providing the opposition for back-to-back games at the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday 3rd August (1.30pm/3.30pm).
