Posh opened their EFL Trophy account with a comfortable 2-0 victory over local rivals Cambridge United at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Peterborough United began their EFL Trophy campaign with a 2-0 victory over Cambridge United at the Weston Homes Stadium with a debut goal from Jadel Katongo followed up by a smart strike from skipper Ephron Mason-Clark in the second half.
The visitors made a bright start to the contest with John-Kymani Gordon forcing goalkeeper Fynn Talley into a smart stop inside the opening few minutes.
Posh opened the scoring on 19 minutes and it was KATONGO who marked his first appearance for the club with a clinical strike from close-range after Ryan De Havilland's shot into the ground bounced nicely for the on-loan Manchester City defender.
Fellow loanee Zak Sturge hit the post from close-range following good work from David Ajiboye while at the other end, Adam May rifled a shot inches past the post.
Jack Lankester saw a low shot gathered by Talley with Hector Kyprianou seeing a shot blocked. Cambridge made three changes at the interval, but it didn't take too long for Posh to double the lead, Mason-Clark collecting a pass from Clarke-Harris before finding the bottom corner.
Jubril Okedina flashed a header wide of the target and substitute Glenn McConnell fired wide but in truth, Posh were comfortable for the duration and only an alarming tumble over the advertising boards by Emmanuel Fernandez, who also headed wide, caused alarm.
Posh have Tottenham Hotspur under 21s next before concluding the group at Colchester United.
