An Oliver Armstrong strike sent Crewe Alexandra home with the points on Wednesday afternoon.
Peterborough United Under 21s suffered a narrow defeat to Crewe Alexandra in the latest Professional Development League fixture on Wednesday afternoon.
The visitors took a second-half lead courtesy of an Armstrong looping effort which, despite some nervy moments, settled the contest.
Ryan Semple fielded an experienced side, which consisted of six changes from Tuesday’s defeat to Burnley – including minutes for Jed Steer who featured for the first time since October.
It was Posh who were on top for much of the first period, but all too often the ball would not land for them in the box.
Harley Mills’ delivery was met by James Dornelly to create the first clear-cut opportunity of the afternoon, but his effort landed well wide.
Oliver Armstrong then tried his luck from 25-yards down the opposite end, but his snapshot failed to concern Steer.
Bradley Ihionvien combined well with Benji McWilliams-Marcano to break quickly on 21 minutes where his effort was routine for Tom Booth.
Mills clipped a ball into Romoney Crichlow on half-hour, with the defender just unable to guide his header goalwards.
Crewe grew back into the game and almost found the opener on 37 minutes when Calum Agius’ effort was thwarted by the woodwork. The visitors kept up the pressure after the break as Iago Scott-Abel teed up Jordan Hodkin who angled an effort wide.
Posh was largely on top from then-on, with Ihionvien sending an effort over the crossbar.
Against the run of play, ARMSTRONG handed the visitors the lead on the hour-mark when his effort looped over Steer at full-stretch.
Aguis looked to double the advantage after the wide-man shifted the ball onto his right-foot before firing at goal, with his effort being denied by the woodwork.
The visitors weathered any late pressure and held on to claim a first victory since late October.
