James Dornelly

Posh full-back has been called up to the England Men's Elite Squad for forthcoming games against Germany and Poland.

Peterborough United Academy graduate James Dornelly has been named in the England Men's Elite Squad for two forthcoming games against Germany and Poland with the teenager linking up with his country on Wednesday morning ahead of the first game on Friday evening at Chesterfield. The second game takes place in Poland next Tuesday night.

It is a first call-up for Dornelly, who has made 20 appearances for Posh in all competitions this season with the 19-year-old also netting his first professional goal in the 3-3 draw with Rotherham United.

Manager Darren Ferguson said: "It is a well deserved call-up for James and excellent for such a young lad. It is big reward for all at the club and is another demonstration of what we do with young players."

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: "I am delighted for JD on the call-up. Over the last couple of years, we have had Benji Arthur called up and Ronnie Edwards captain the Under 20s in multiple games.

"It is credit to our Academy and the hard work from the staff in our first team, working with JD and making him into one of the best teenage right-backs outside of the Premier League.

"JD has been with our club since the age of 8 and to see him making these strides fills me with pride. There is a lot more to come from this level headed young man."

Academy Director Dan Robinson added: "I am delighted for James, it is an absolutely magnificent achievement for him and his family and testament to all the hard work that he has put in.

"James is a great example of someone who has worked hard for many years since joining us at the age of eight-years-old. As an Academy, we are proud of him.

"It is a great example for all of our young players that if you put the hard work in, the pathway is there, not just to progress into our first team, but also to get international recognition.

"A lot of credit must go to Darragh MacAnthony because that investment that he has put into the Academy has definitely produced some excellent players like James, The purposes of EPPP is to produce home grown players and we are delighted that James has been named in this squad and I look forward to going to Chesterfield on Friday night and hopefully seeing him in action."

Good luck James!
