Driscoll puts pen to paper to mark an exciting chapter in Posh Women history.
Peterborough United Women are delighted to announce that midfielder Jess Driscoll has agreed terms with the club for the 2022/23 campaign, becoming the first women’s player to sign a formal commitment in the club’s history.
The women’s game has been growing at an enormous rate across the country in recent years, and Posh Women has been part of the growth in the last 12 months, falling under the football club umbrella and reaching step-four of the women’s football pyramid.
The Posh Women have marked another exciting chapter in the club history as they announce that terms will be available for players for the first-time since the club was formed in 2015, signalling the importance and growth of the team within the football club.
Peterborough-based Driscoll becomes the first-ever player to put pen to paper after being an influential part of Dan Lawlor’s side that has guaranteed safety in their debut season in the FA Women’s National League, netting 11 goals in 19 appearances.
The midfielder, who has clocked up an impressive 89 appearances across two spells at the club, admitted it was a special moment to sign the contract at her hometown club and highlights the growth of the club since re-signing for the club last summer.
“I’m really grateful to be handed this opportunity,” said Driscoll. “It's a very special moment for me to be the first women’s player in the club's history to agree terms, especially as this is my hometown football club. So, I want to grab this opportunity with both hands, more importantly, help the team push on.
“This shows that the women’s game is growing, and today’s news shows that the club is following that direction, a very positive one. It’s just a great step for the club. I’m pleased with what I have achieved at the club across the two spells, but there’s always room for more, that might just be me being a little greedy. I will look to continue what I’m doing and push on as a player, hopefully grabbing more goals and appearances, and help the team reach its full potential.”
Posh Women General Manager Bobby Copping said: “It’s fantastic to say that we have been able to tie down Jess and we are excited to mark another exciting chapter in the club’s history. Jess has very much earned this with some outstanding performances for the club this season and we are delighted that she becomes our first women’s player in the club’s history to put pen to paper.
“From the start of the season to where we are now is a massive difference, in terms of the league position, the revenue, the squad and staffing, the growth has been exponential. If we can continue doing that each year, then I have no doubt this club will become successful in years to come. This is the next step to really progress.
“There were two sides to handing out these terms. The first side to reward the players as they have been brilliant, not only this season but for the past few years, and these commitments allow us to reward them. On the other hand, it’s tying them down and showing that we want to progress. In the next two years, we want to achieve promotion and we have demonstrated that on and off the pitch this season, there’s no reason why we can’t take that next step now, we have everything in place and now it’s time to really push on.”
