Jess Driscoll’s last-minute winner secures Posh Women’s third win on the bounce in the league.
Peterborough United Women continued with their excellent run of form, extending their unbeaten run to six victories in all competitions, after a 2-1 victory over Lincoln City Women at Lincoln Moorlands Railway FC on Thursday evening, including a last-minute stunning solo strike from Jess Driscoll to secure the points.
Both sides struggled to find their footing in the opening 45 minutes, with neither side creating many clear goalscoring opportunities. Rachel Lawrence’s free-kick on eight minutes looked promising for the visitors to open the scoring, but landed on top of the netting.
On 13 minutes, a free-kick at the other end of the pitch saw Leah Hardy’s effort excellently saved and pushed out for a corner by Kira Markwell. Lincoln continued to push for an opener, and on 31 minutes, their closest opportunity in the opening half came as Chantelle Robinson’s effort from the edge of the area struck the crossbar.
As the second half began, both sides remained hungry to open the scoring, and on 52 minutes, Posh did just that. Lawlor’s side broke quickly, and it was Lawrence who advanced down the right-hand side to pass the ball into Tara Kirk on the edge of the box and she fired home on the half-volley into the bottom corner.
On 67 minutes, McHamilton’s free-kick effort from the edge of the box was again well-saved by Markwell. Just two minutes later, McHamilton had another attempt as she beat the Posh defence and advanced into the box, but her lofted effort went over the bar.
On 75 minutes, Lawrence’s corner caused a scramble inside the box as Posh looked to double their lead, but couldn’t force the ball home before the goalkeeper smothered the loose ball. The Imps found their equaliser on 85 minutes as Robinson advanced into the box, her initial effort was blocked by Evie Driscoll-King, but on the second attempt, she directed the ball into the top corner.
Posh were not going down without a fight, and the final five minutes saw the visitors push for the winner. In the final minute of the game, a sublime run from Jess Driscoll saw her breeze past three defenders before rounding the keeper to slot the ball home into the empty net, securing yet another three points for Posh.
