Posh Women bow out of the FA Women’s National League Cup after defeat at Forest.
Peterborough United Women suffered a 6-0 loss against Tier 3 opposition Nottingham Forest at Grange Park on Sunday afternoon as their FA Women’s National League Cup journey came to an end in the second round.
It was a lively start with an early chance from the hosts, but the referee deemed their efforts offside before Johnson could finish the move off.
Forest put the pressure on in the opening minutes including Chandarana playing Johnson through on goal, but Posh recovered well before she could strike an effort.
On 9 minutes, James regained possession for Posh and she drove an effort across goal but no one in blue could connect.
The hosts opened the scoring on 11 minutes after WELLING met a deep cross at the back post and scored from a tight angle.
Thomas fired a shot over the crossbar before a corner caused havoc in the box, but Connor fought to head the ball clear off the line on 18 minutes.
Posh’s defence remained busy including good pressure from Driscoll-King that led to Howe’s effort going wide and James heading another curling effort off the line.
Posh keeper Neive Corry parried away another threatening cross from Howe before she somehow kept out a deep corner ball from Dungate with her fingertips on 40 minutes.
The hosts doubled their lead a minute later with a header from JOHNSON at the back post before she sought a second before the break where she flashed an effort at the side netting.
Forest continued the second half on the front foot with Olding curling an effort from outside the box wide of the post, before Longhurst was cautioned for dragging down Bale on the break.
On 53 minutes, Posh were awarded a free-kick, but Lawlor’s effort was gathered well by Ferguson.
The hosts added a third on 55 minutes with JOHNSON showcasing some good footwork in the box before slotting in the bottom corner to claim her second goal.
Corry parried another ball away following a shot from close range, before GALLOWAY added another goal to the tally after Chandarana played the striker through, leaving her to shoot past the keeper on 67 minutes.
Soon after, Brown found Perkins through on goal, but she fired her effort just wide of the post.
On 86 minutes, Forest scored their fifth where, despite an initial fingertip save from Corry, the ball fell kindly to DOMINGO at the far post who tapped in.
Even Forest fans were impressed by Corry’s efforts including a great save on 90 minutes where she tipped the ball away, following a curling effort to the far post.
The hosts concluded the scoring in injury time with a last minute strike from CHANDARANA to seal the 6-0 victory and progression into the quarter finals of the FAWNL League Cup.
Posh are back in league action next Sunday afternoon (2pm) where they face Lincoln United Women at Deeping Rangers FC whilst construction continues at Abbey Lawn.
