On Tuesday, Peterborough United Foundation held a Show Racism the Red Card event for 60 local school pupils at the Weston Homes Stadium.
The day began with two brilliant workshops, delivered by Jack and Paul from Show Racism the Red Card and pupils from New Road in Whittlesey, and Stanground St. Johns Primary Schools also enjoyed a stadium tour of the Weston Homes Stadium, whilst also meeting club mascot, Peter Burrow.
In the afternoon, we were fortunate to be joined by four Peterborough United Academy players (Milan Kovaci, Andre Changunda, Max Beech and Ben Westcott) and two first team players (Ryan De Havilland and Bradley Ihionvien) – for a Q&A discussion, where the players spoke about incidents of discrimination they have seen in football, if they had been unfortunate enough to do so, how they would react if they were discriminated against and about the pressures of life growing up as a footballer in the public eye.
Gavin Slater, School Sports Manager at Peterborough United Foundation, said: “We were thrilled to be asked to hold a Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) event at the Weston Homes Stadium. We welcomed 60 local schoolchildren, where they received two fantastic and thought-provoking workshops delivered by the SRtRC charity. We offered pupils the opportunity to have a behind the scenes tour of the ground and meet first team and academy players and also club mascot Peter Burrow.
"The education of pupils on topics such as anti-discrimination is an important area and one we deliver to support our Premier League Primary Stars project. I would like to thank Jack and Paul from SRtRC for the excellent delivery and resources distributed and very much look forward to working with them again in the near future. 60 pupils had a wonderful day.”
“To deliver a wonderful and fun-filled event, with Peterborough United, was an amazing experience. 60 Year 6 students engaged fantastically throughout and learned how to both recognize and safely challenge racism, through different activities. They enjoyed a brilliant stadium tour, asked current players thoughtful questions in our Q+A panel, and even met Peter Burrow, the team mascot! A big thank you to Gavin, Luke, Joe and the team at The Posh Foundation for their excellent support.” – Jack Cunningham, Club Event Coordinator & Educator at Show Racism the Red Card."
