Hector Kyprianou

Since making the move from Leyton Orient, Hector Kyprianou has already made great strides in his own personal development, both on and off the pitch, but he is not resting on his laurels - in fact, he is working even harder to get the most out of his attributes.

The 23-year-old is a bit like a sponge when it comes to information, he absorbs it and uses the knowledge to his advantage when he crosses that white line.

The midfielder knows where he needs to improve and is in regular conversations with the coaches, both at Peterborough United, but also on the international stage as he strives to get the most out of his obvious physical ability.

"For me, it is about learning and improving all of the time. I want to be the best version of myself. I talk to the coaches here, I analyse my game, I speak to people outside of the club and country and try to take those positive points into my performances.

"I had a conversation with Jonson Clarke-Harris last season and he was saying that I should score more goals with my head and he is right, I know that I have the ability to score more goals. I scored eight times last season, but I was probably in the box over 200 times, so it is about anticipating the opportunities and timing my runs.

"That for sure is an area that I know I can improve on, whether that be from set-pieces or from open play.  Certainly an understanding with Archie Collins from last season can be important in knowing when to go and join in further forward.

"There were a lot of positives both individually and collectively last season. We know we need to build on that. The training has been good so far and this week in Spain is really important in terms of building relationships.

"When I joined from Leyton Orient, the pre-season training camp was huge for me because I was able to really get to know my team-mates and I am sure the new lads will be feeling exactly the same this time around," Kyprianou said.

While many players enjoyed a long rest during the summer after a challenging campaign on and off the pitch last term, Kyprianou was representing his country, Cyprus, in games against Moldova and San Marino.

Once again, those appearances came as a centre back in a three-man defence, but Kyprianou insists playing out of position can help his game back at club level.

"It is the first time as an international player where I have had games during the off-season, so it was about making sure the balance was right. We had a couple of weeks off, then it was a training camp in Cyprus and then we went out to Moldova and San Marino for the matches.

"It is always a pleasure to play for your country and I enjoyed the experience. Obviously I am playing in a different position, but that is all good, in fact it can help really understanding the positional side of the game from a defensive point of view.

"In international football, the tempo is actually less frenetic than in England at club level, but you know that the opposition will punish you if you make a mistake," Kyprianou added.

The 23-year-old has already clocked up over 100 appearances for the club and scored twice against his former club Leyton Orient last term, one at home and one away.
