Gustav Lindgren is congratulated after scoring against Walsall

Gustav Lindgren and Malik Mothersille both scored twice as Posh progressed in the Vertu Trophy thanks to a 4-2 victory over Walsall.

As home debuts go, Gustav Lindgren can be pretty happy with his effort. The Swedish front man scored twice, linked brilliantly with others and left to a standing ovation as Peterborough United progressed into the quarter-finals of the Vertu Trophy following a 4-2 victory over Walsall at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Darren Ferguson's men made a bright start to the game and opened the scoring on six minutes, LINDGREN firing under the goalkeeper after good work from Chris Conn-Clarke.

Jadel Katongo fired wide on 11 minutes via a deflection as Posh pushed for a second goal and two minutes later, there was a chance to double the lead as Emmanuel Fernandez was upended in the box.

Malik MOTHERSILLE coolly stepped up and fired his spot-kick into the back of the net. Nick Bilokapic parried an effort away from danger from Lakin on 18 minutes.

On 29 minutes, the Saddlers pulled a goal back as JOHNSON fired into the back of the net via a slight deflection. It was 3-1 on the half hour mark and a second for LINDGREN as he raced onto a header from Mothersille and drilled the ball past the advancing keeper for his second goal of the night.

A mistake from Bilokapic presented Johnson with a chance on the stroke of half-time, but the striker fired straight at the keeper.

Posh made it 4-1 on 73 minutes as good work from Bradley Ihionvien, which saw him beat two defenders and pull the ball back into a dangerous area, was finished off by MOTHERSILLE for his 10th goal of the campaign.

Conn-Clarke drifted a shot just past the post after good work down the right while Browne struck the post with a header for the visitors.

Adomah sliced a shot wide while Lakin saw a shot beaten away by Bilokapic as that one v one encounter continued throughout the second half.

Bilokapic produced a superb fingertip save to keep out Lakin on 79 minutes, pushing the effort onto the crossbar and the keeper came out on top again on 87 minutes.

Jones saw an effort claimed by Hornby after originally nutmegging his opponent before Bilokapic tipped over from Gordon and then kept out a shot from Lakin again.

Five minutes into stoppage time, GORDON found a consolation as he closed down Bilokapic's clearance with the ball rebounding into the back of the net.
