Posh Women to face The Reds in the FAWNL Cup Determining Round.
Peterborough United Women will begin their FA Women’s National League Cup journey on Sunday afternoon (2pm) as they face Barnsley Women at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park.
The Reds play in the FA Women’s National League Division One North and started their campaign with a 4-0 win over Chorley Women last weekend. Last season’s WNL Cup saw Barnsley Women reach the preliminary round where they lost 2-1 to Liverpool Feds after extra-time.
Posh go into the fixture keen to make amends as they enter on the back of a 2-1 defeat to local rivals Northampton Town Women. Posh Women have lost the determining round in both the previous two seasons against Long Eaton United and Stockport County before competing in the FAWNL Plate where they lost 4-0 against eventual runners-up Stourbridge.
Team News
Dan Lawlor will have a full squad to select from on Sunday, with only Zaiga Làcìte and Eden Bailey the absentees for Posh. One member of the team is unavailable, providing U23s player Edyn Osker the chance to claim more first team minutes.
The Reds signed several additions over the summer, including FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division defender Autumn Housley and striker Abi Housecroft who impressed during Barnsley’s pre-season.
From The Gaffer
“It’s cliché, but the only way a team can get over a loss is to see a reaction in their next training session and the next game. We had a brilliant session in the week. We’ll change the team a little bit and tamper with our play at times, but ultimately, I just want to see more desire from them on Sunday. We’ve got a few players who experienced a broken pre-season, so we aim to get more minutes into those players.”
“We haven’t played against Barnsley before so we don’t really know what to expect from them. They go into Sunday on the back of a strong win, but we know at tier four there is no easy game. They’re going to be a physically fit team, but if we go there and play our football I’m sure we’ll cause them problems.”
One To Watch
Forward Emily Pierrpoint failed to score in the opening day victory over Chorley last Sunday but certainly knows how to find the back of the net. Pierrpoint finished as the club’s leading goalscorer last season, netting 10 goals in 27 appearances to help Barnsley Women’s finish fourth in the table.
Previous Meeting
This weekend’s meeting will be the first time both sides have met in a competitive competition. Posh have faced fellow FA Women’s National League Division One North side Stockport County in the determining round last season, suffering a 1-0 defeat in extra-time at the Abbey Lawn.
