Posh v Northampton Town

A look ahead to Tuesday night's Vertu Trophy tie with Northampton Town at the Weston Homes Stadium (7pm).

Peterborough United welcome Northampton Town to the Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday evening (7pm) in the knockout stages of the Vertu Trophy - the second meeting with the Cobblers within a week after the two teams met in Sky Bet League One action at Sixfields.

Posh progressed to the knockout stages after winning all three of their group games while Northampton won two of their group games against Notts County and Leicester City Under 21s. They lost their final game against Burton Albion.

TEAM NEWS

Posh are without the services of winger Kwame Poku (hamstring) with the former Colchester United man set to be out until February 2025 with a hamstring injury.

Donay O'Brien-Brady is suspended so won't feature, while Rio Adebisi will be playing 45 minutes for the Under 21s in a behind closed doors game with Huddersfield Town.

Gustav Lindgren will also feature for 45 minutes in that particular game. Jed Steer is unavailable due to a knee injury while Chris Conn-Clarke can't feature due to concussion, although he could play on Friday at Stockport County. Bradley Ihionvien remains sidelined but he is making good progress.

On the other hand, Northampton boss Sampson will have defenders Timothy Eyoma and Jordan Willis available this weekend after they featured in the matchday squad against Rotherham.

However, the caretaker manager noted in his post-match interview on Saturday that the pair are still building fitness, so do not expect either to play the full 90 minutes if they make the XI.

MANAGER QUOTES

'I am not too sure how Northampton will approach the game, but to be honest, it is how about we play and we are determined to be successful in this competition. I won't be making wholesale changes, there are one or two that will have to come out because of the schedule and their limits, but there are opportunities for others to step in and perform," Darren Ferguson said.

ONE TO WATCH

Cameron McGeehan

Northampton Town signed attacking midfielder Cameron McGeehan (pictured below) in July 2024. The Northern Ireland international turned professional with Norwich City, captaining them to victory in the FA Youth Cup and enjoyed loan spells with Luton Town and Cambridge United before joining the Hatters on a permanent basis in 2015. He made 65 appearances, scoring 22 goals for the Kenilworth Road side, before signing for then Championship club Barnsley in 2017, where he scored nine times in 61 games as well as spending time on loan with Scunthorpe United and Portsmouth.

He moved to Oostende in the top flight in Belgium in 2020 and scored seven times in 54 games before returning to England with Colchester United in 2023. McGeehan scored 10 goals and added five assists from midfield for the U’s in the 2023/24 season, and turned down a new contract with the Essex side to make the move to Sixfields.
