A look ahead to Sunday’s clash between Posh Women and Loughborough Lightning at Abbey Lawn.
Peterborough United Women continue their FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands campaign on Sunday afternoon (2pm) as they welcome Loughborough Lightning Abbey Lawn.
Dan Lawlor’s side will be looking to continue their winning ways after last Wednesday’s 6-1 victory over Notts County Women, thanks to goals from Emily Brett, Tara Kirk Jess Driscoll, Niamh Connor, Poppie Brown and a spot-kick from Ella Hilliard.
Lightning have enjoyed a fantastic season so far back in tier four, picking up twelve wins and four draws to put them second in the table after securing a 4-0 victory over Leek Town last Thursday. They were beaten 2-0 by Leicester City Women WSL Academy in the Westerby Women's Cup at home last Sunday.
Team News
Lawlor confirmed that he has a full squad at his disposal with no injuries sustained from Wednesday. Ellie York remains a long-term absentee as she recovers from an ACL injury.
Forward Tara Kirk claimed back her place at the club’s top goalscorer after netting last week.
Earlier this month, Loughborough welcomed Ella Jarowicki on a dual registration from Leicester City Women for the remainder of the season.
From The Gaffer
“I’m excited. As a player myself as well, these are the games you want to be involved in; these are the games you want to test yourself in. They’re a good side, we’re a good side. It’s two good teams going at it and for me whoever is better on the day will come away with the points.
“We’re expecting a team who are very comfortable with the ball. Loughborough are well organised, very good on the break and they have sharp players going up the pitch. There’s more than enough for us to worry about, but there’s also areas we can hurt them.
“At this moment, with the way we’re training and playing, I think we’re a bit of a different animal at the minute and I really hope that we give a good account of ourselves.
“Whenever we play at Abbey Lawn the fans get behind us, it’s brilliant. We’ve made it our fortress and we don’t lose many games at home. Especially with these new bits coming in, it’s very exciting and I think it’ll be a good atmosphere on Sunday.”
One To Watch
Current top-scorer for Lightning is Lauren Purchase who has netted eleven times in 20 appearances so far this season.
Last Time Out
Three goals inside the opening ten minutes of the second half condemned the Posh to a 4-2 defeat at Loughborough University Stadium back in October. Tara Kirk netted an early goal before Ellie York’s wonder cross joined the scoresheet.
