Peterborough United Women are set for a top of the table clash as they welcome fellow unbeaten side Loughborough Lightning to Yaxley Football Club on Thursday evening (7.45pm) in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands.
Both sides have achieved emphatic score lines so far in the 2024/25 campaign and Thursday evening will determine which team will continue their winning streak.
Posh Women made it seven wins on the bounce on Sunday afternoon as they secured a late 1-0 victory over Solihull Moors thanks to Renai Bennett heading home in the 98th minute at Studley Sports Centre.
Lightning’s fixture against Northampton Town was postponed at the weekend, leaving Posh a game in hand. Loughborough most recently secured a 4-0 victory over Worcester City at home.
TEAM NEWS
Poole confirmed that he has some tough decisions to make ahead of Thursday evening with a strong selection to choose from for his matchday squad.
FROM THE GAFFER
Manager Jake Poole said: “Peterborough and Loughborough are probably two of the best teams in Tier 4 at the moment across the board. Loughborough are a great organisation, they’re really professional in the way that they do anything and there’s lots to admire about the way that Loughborough work. Charlie’s a great coach like the rest of his coaching staff and they have some really good players- we’re expecting a really tough test.”
ONE TO WATCH
Charlie Baxter’s side welcomed various new players throughout pre-season, including Kenzy Collingbourne from Durham WFC, Hazel Cotton and Lucy White from Brighton and Lucy McConnell from Newcastle United. Lauren Purchase is the one to watch this Thursday as the club’s top goalscorer last season, with three goals already to her name for the 2024/25 campaign.
LAST TIME OUT
Posh suffered a narrow 2-1 to Lightning at Abbey Lawn back in March in another competitive top of the table encounter. Despite a successful spot-kick from Meg Lawlor, Posh were defeated after second half strikes from Jade Arber.
