Action between Oxford United and Posh

Posh bow out of the Carabao Cup after a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.

Peterborough United conceded two goals before the interval to bow out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle as Sky Bet Championship side Oxford United secured a 2-0 victory at the Kassam Stadium.

Darren Ferguson’s men made a bright start to the contest with Archie Collins denied by Ingram inside the opening two minutes and centre back Wallin headed over from a deep Joel Randall centre.

Jack Sparkes curled a free-kick over the top from 20-yards after Cian Hayes was upended before Odoh was denied by Ingram after a flowing Posh move with Randall and Hayes both involved.

Matt Phillips was inches away from opening the scoring at the other end, but his effort went wide of the target before Nick Bilokapic produced a superb stop to push around an effort from Goodrham.

On 19 minutes, the home side opened the scoring as a back-pass from Sparkes was controlled by Bilokapic, but GOODRHAM was there to close him down and force the ball into the back of the net.

On 41 minutes, Oxford doubled their lead as PHILLIPS tapped home from close-range following a low centre. Hayes tested Ingram 60 seconds into the second half before another weaving run from the former Fleetwood man saw him beat two defenders before his curler was kept out by Ingram.

Another strong run from Hayes saw him burst into the defensive third of the hosts and his slide-rule pass found Ricky-Jade Jones on the angle, but his low shot was well kept out by Ingram.

Bilokapic kept out O’Donkor with his legs at the near post on 72 minutes before Posh carved out another good chance, Conn-Clarke at the heart of it, but Odoh found the side-netting with the final shot.

O’Brien-Brady flicked a shot wide of the near post from a David Ajiboye cross as the tie moved into the last 10 minutes. Oxford came close to a third as Brannagan’s low shot was cleared off the line before Mothersille failed to round the keeper at the other end following a swift counter-attack.

Bilokapic tipped over from O’Donkor again two minutes before the end before the referee brought an end to proceedings. After the game, manager Darren Ferguson confirmed midfielder Mahamadou Susolo had sustained a potentially serious muscle injury, which occurred during the warm-up.
