East of England Ambulance Service

Posh and ambulance service join forces to raise CPR awareness.

The East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) and Peterborough United have joined forces to promote vital CPR skills as part of an annual resuscitation awareness campaign.

Players from the Posh first team, women’s team and academy and Posh fans will be taught CPR and the use of a defibrillator by EEAST’s staff and volunteers on Monday 23rd September from 6pm until 7pm.

We also have limited availability for supporters to attend the event free of charge. If you wish to attend, please complete the google form link here and you will be emailed with further details.

The aim of the partnership with Peterborough United and the Peterborough United Foundation is to encourage others to learn CPR and the use of a defibrillator ahead of Restart a Heart Day on 16 October.

More than 30,000 people have a cardiac arrest each year. For cardiac arrests outside of hospitals, 1 in 10 people survive.

With 80% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happening at home, learning CPR could mean helping a loved one’s chances of survival.

Like football, survival from a cardiac arrest is a team effort. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by 10%, demonstrating the significant impact a bystander can have by starting CPR early.

The aim of the partnership is to create an army of lifesavers in Peterborough and across the East of England.

Background

  • EEAST responds to around 4,000 patients in cardiac arrest each year
  • 37% of people surveyed by the Resuscitation Council UK said they wouldn’t feel very confident they could help someone having a cardiac arrest, while 24% said they wouldn’t be at all confident.
  • Only 11% of people surveyed said they felt totally confident about using a defibrillator correctly.
  • 15% of people surveyed think only trained medical professionals are allowed to use a defibrillator.
