Posh suffer disappointing defeat to struggling Carlisle United at the Weston Homes Stadium.
It was a Good Friday to forget for Peterborough United as struggling Carlisle United left PE2 with all three points after a ruthless performance in front of goal from the visitors yielded three points in their quest to avoid the drop from Sky Bet League One.
Posh started the game strongly and were camped in the visitors half for much of the opening 20 minutes but a Malik Mothersille shot that went wide of the target is all they had to show for their efforts.
The visitors opened the scoring on 26 minutes as a short corner kick routine left Posh exposed and MELLISH headed past Steer from close-range.
Mason-Clark curled an effort over the bar on 29 minutes and Ryan De Havilland's left-foot strike was not too far away before Kwame Poku sliced wide in a presentable chance in first half stoppage time.
The second half started poorly for Posh as MELLISH made it 2-0 with a clean strike and on 57 minutes, the visitors made it 3-0 as MELLISH found the back of the net with a well-struck volley.
On the hour mark, Posh pulled a goal back as a long-range left-footed strike from Harrison BURROWS found the bottom corner. Mason-Clark fired wide before substitute Jonson Clarke-Harris headed wide after a good cross into the box.
Mason-Clark was then denied by the legs of goalkeeper Lewis before the same player fired wildly wide after a long throw from Jones.
Three minutes from time, Posh struck the bar as Clarke-Harris saw an improvised finish smack against the woodwork.
