Posh lift the 2024 Bristol Street Motors Trophy

It may not have been the season that everyone wanted, but there is still the possibility of lifting silverware with Posh preparing for a quarter-final in the Vertu Trophy.

It has had many title sponsors down the years, but Peterborough United and the EFL Trophy have a pretty good relationship and manager Darren Ferguson is determined to try and retain the trophy to provide some positivity during a difficult domestic campaign.

Posh face Sky Bet League Two side Cheltenham Town at the Weston Homes Stadium on Wednesday evening (7pm) with a semi-final spot at stake for the winners.

For Ferguson, he is trying to win the trophy for the third time as Posh boss after success back in 2014 and of course at Wembley Stadium last season.

Back in 2014, it was named the Johnstone's Paint Trophy as goals from Josh McQuoid, Shaun Brisley and Britt Assombolanga earned a 3-1 victory over Chesterfield.

Last season it was all about Harrison Burrows as his two goals secured a 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers in front of over 20,000 Posh fans.

Ferguson knows the incentive of Wembley is a huge carrot to be dangling and is urging his team to continue this season's form in the competition.

"You win the game on Wednesday and you are one game away from Wembley. It won't be easy because Cheltenham are a good side and are in decent form, but that is the incentive for the players.

"I know it hasn't been the best season to date, but this trophy is important to us, we are the holders of it and we would love to be able to retain it.

"We have done well in the competition this season, winning every game that we have played and hopefully we can get the result we want on Wednesday.

"This competition has always been important to me and important to the club and that has been reflected by how we have gone about it," Ferguson said.

Tickets for tomorrow night's fixture are on sale now, come along to support the boys as we are just two fixtures away from another date at Wembley Stadium.
