Peterborough United were beaten 1-0 by Portsmouth at the Weston Homes Stadium in a competitive encounter, with Darren Ferguson's men controlling the game for long periods and creating the best opportunities in front of goal, but they were ultimately undone by substitute Kusini Yengi's strike on the break.
Malik Mothersille was involved in the bright early moments for Posh, he hooked a cross-shot across the box inside the opening two minutes and then sent an acrobatic volley over the crossbar.
On 12 minutes, Marlon Pack saw a free-kick kept out by Jed Steer but moments later, it was Posh on the break as Harrison Burrows raced onto a through ball from Ephron Mason-Clark, but with options to his right, he had a go himself and was a whisker away from finding the bottom corner.
On 22 minutes, Posh were so close to a deserved opener as Mason-Clark saw his powerful drive smack against the crossbar after good work from Jadel Katongo.
Colby Bishop headed straight at Steer moments later from a Pack free-kick before Mason-Clark fired into the side-netting after good work from Archie Collins.
Mason-Clark saw a low effort kept out by Will Norris on 38 minutes before Randall saw a shot deflect wide of the target.
Mothersille hooked a volley wide from an acute angle 10 minutes into the second half, before the visitors opened the scoring against the run of play as YENGI drilled a lot shot past Steer.
Yengi saw a close-range shot beaten away by Steer after he had wriggled into the penalty area as Portsmouth threatened a second.
Burrows fired over after good work from Katongo at the other end as Posh pushed forward to try and find a leveller but despite their efforts, they came up short.
