Posh well beaten by excellent Coventry City side.
Peterborough United suffered their heaviest home defeat of the campaign as Coventry City swept aside Darren Ferguson’s men at the Weston Homes Stadium with former Posh front man Matt Godden netting twice.
Jordan Shipley side-footed wide with his left-foot from a decent position on six minutes as the visitors tried to find an early breakthrough. Referee Keith Stroud, keen to make an impact, showed a yellow card to Posh skipper Oliver Norburn moments later for essentially the first foul in the game.
The deadlock was broken on 14 minutes as a long-range effort from Gustavo HAMER flew into the back of the net with Cornell only able to get fingertips to the effort. Wilson was called upon to make a good stop from Jorge Grant’s effort from 20-yards as Posh tried to work their way back into the contest.
Hyam was cautioned for an extremely late challenge on Burrows by referee Stroud on 24 minutes. The visitors doubled their tally moments later as Mumba was robbed and the ball was played through to GODDEN, who made no mistake, firing past Cornell and into the back of the net.
Szmodics had the ball in the back of the net on 28 minutes but it was wrongly ruled offside. Allen dinked an effort wide of the target after being played through on goal on 34 minutes as the Sky Blues, playing with plenty of confidence, threatened a third.
However, within 60 seconds, Posh had pulled a goal back and it was an excellent goal from 25-yards by Jorge GRANT, who rifled his left-foot shot past Wilson and into the top corner. Mumba was cautioned by Stroud on 40 minutes for a foul.
Grant fired wide from distance on 47 minutes as the second half got underway with no changes for either side. Cornell did well to keep out a low effort from Hamer moments later. The Sky Blues came close to a third on 55 minutes as Callum O’Hare struck the post from close-range after a wicked ball into the box.
Cornell did well to keep out a stinging effort from Shipley moments later as two Posh players slipped before Hamer curled a shot inches wide. Posh made a change just before the hour mark with Jonson Clarke-Harris replacing Dembele in attack.
Edwards was cautioned for a foul on 62 minutes and from the resulting free-kick, Jamie Allen struck the post following a well-worked set-piece. Cornell did well to tip over a fierce drive from substitute Gyokeres as the game entered the final 20 minutes.
Posh made their final change with 10 minutes to play as Kwame Poku replaced Szmodics. On 81 minutes, the visitors got their third as a cross into the box was diverted past his own goalkeeper by Thompson.
Poku fired over the top from the edge of the box after wriggling into a bit of space on 82 minutes. In stoppage time, the Sky Blues added a fourth as GODDEN swept home following a counter attack.
