Posh U16s face The Latics in the final of the U16 Professional Development League Cup.
Peterborough United U16s face Wigan Athletic U16s at the DW Stadium on Saturday afternoon (2pm) in the final of the Under-16 Professional Development League Cup.
Elio Salerno’s side overcame Swansea City U16s in the quarter-final after an eight-game thriller at the idverde Training Ground, beating The Swans on penalties following a 4-4 draw in 120 minutes.
The under 16s booked their place in the final of the competition after a 1-0 victory over Cardiff City in the semi-final of the competition, with Edward Fox’s strike separating the two sides at the Abbey Lawn.
Posh have enjoyed a successful week throughout the academy, with the under 18s finishing third in the table and winning their respective Professional Development League Cup, and Salerno’s side will be looking to round off a fantastic season for themselves by potentially lifting silverware on Saturday.
Speaking ahead of the game, Salerno said: “We have been looking forward to this since we got through the semi-final. It will be a great occasion for all the players and staff involved in it and we are all very excited to get there and get the game going in what has been a very good week for the club. They won’t get these opportunities, so you have to make the most of it and then definitely enjoy the occasion, taking the experience and using that as motivation.
“I came in halfway through the journey and got involved when we played Cardiff and Swansea. It has been really exciting and we have done so well to get through those two games against some tough opponents, we have now given ourselves an opportunity to make memories for the players. This is a bonus for us, it was definitely something that was potentially unexpected, but it is a bonus for us at the end of the season.”
Admission for all supporters is free at the DW Stadium.
Updates of the game will be provided as much as possible on The Posh Academy Twitter account (@theposhacademy).
