Posh U18s continue their excellent run of form after a 2-1 victory over The Latics.
Peterborough United U18s secured their fifth consecutive win in the Under-18 Professional Development League on Saturday morning after a 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic at the idverde Training Ground.
Jamal Campbell-Ryce’s men fell behind in the game, but goals from Harley Mills and Reuben Marshall in the second half completed the turnaround for the under 18s and saw another three points lift them into second-place in the table.
The visitors opened the scoring on seven minutes as Benjamin Arthur’s ball back to Jake West went under his foot and into the back of the net. Posh grabbed an equaliser on 51 minutes as The Latics’ goalkeeper dropped the ball just outside the box and Mills, who was lurking behind the keeper, pounced on the loose ball and slotted home into the empty net.
The under 18s took the lead on the hour mark as Tyler Winters chipped the ball through to Marshall inside the box, who then collided with the goalkeeper and the referee pointed to the spot. Marshall stepped up and calmly converted the penalty.
Speaking on the game, Campbell-Ryce said: “Their goal was a freak goal which was a pass back and just went under Jake’s foot, but was completely against the run of play. I said to the players at half-time just be patient and don’t force things, keep possession of the ball and things will organically open up and that’s exactly what happened.
“The scoreline still flattered them a little, but going one-nil down and showing that character to come back was good to see. It was the same last week, we went ahead but they grabbed an equaliser and for the rest of the first half, we were on the back foot. However, we showed our quality and controlled the second half. I’m just really proud of all the players at the minute.”
Posh XI: West, Dornelly, Mills, Titchmarsh, Arthur, Rose, Challinor, Marcon, Marshall, Ntege, Changunda.
