Posh U21s suffer defeat to The Tykes at Oakwell Stadium.
Peterborough United U21s suffered a 4-2 defeat to Barnsley U21s at Oakwell Stadium on Tuesday afternoon in the Professional Development, with Hisham Chiha and Gabe Overton netting the two goals for Posh.
Chances were few and far between in the first half as the first opportunity fell to the hosts on 12 minutes, their Trialist was picked out from just 12 yards out, but he sent his effort over the bar. Jake West was called into action just before the break, getting a strong hand on a vicious effort from Conor McCarthy.
However, Posh broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time and it was a superb finish from Chiha. He received the ball from about 25 yards out and unleashed a powerful effort into the top corner, giving Kieren Flavell no chance.
Within a couple of minutes of the restart, The Tykes levelled the contest as Theo Chapman was brought down inside the box and Fabio Jalo stepped up to fire home the spot kick into the bottom left corner.
The hosts went down to 10 men on the hour-mark as Nathan James was dismissed after he upended the Trialist breaking through on-goal. However, The Tykes took the lead shortly after as their Trialist slotted home from close-range after patient build-up play.
They extended their advantage with 10 minutes left on the clock as Chapman found Mylan Benjamin and he blasted the ball into the top corner. Jalo added a fourth and his second of the afternoon, slotting the ball under West after a swift counter-attack.
Overton grabbed a consolation goal for Posh in injury-time as Harley Mills’ cross found the forward and he guided his header over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The hosts were then down to nine men as McCarthy was brandished a second yellow card by the referee after throwing the ball away.
U21s Lead Professional Development Phase Coach, Ryan Semple, said: “It was very disappointing. We found ourselves one-nil up in the first half, which was a positive and really good in terms of the move and the finish from Hisham [Chiha]. But, ultimately, we didn’t play with our identity, we didn’t move the ball in the way we expected and have seen the player do at times and it was a game where we should have had more control and more quality in certain areas of the pitch.
“They were poor goals to give away, but the level of errors is the most frustrating part and then the knock-on effect of not defending well, not getting up against people and, at times, not tracking runners.”
