Action between Posh and Northampton Town

Posh were heavily beaten by Northampton Town in Sky Bet League One action on Saturday afternoon.

Sometimes everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. Today was one of those days. There is no doubt that Northampton Town deserved all three points and also in the emphatic manner that they achieved it in, but Peterborough United were the masters of their own downfall in this content, losing discipline and some awful goals.

The visitors were in control, both in terms of the performance and the score-line before Tayo Edun was sent off following an altercation after a horrible defensive mix-up.

Dara Costelloe headed wide inside the opening two minutes while Jadel Katongo cleared off the line as the visitors pressed for the breakthrough.

James Dornelly did test goalkeeper Lee Burge following a swift counter-attack while Steer kept out Costelloe at the other end.

Sam HOSKINS fired the Cobblers in front with a sweet strike on 15 minutes and Costelloe came close to doubling the lead from distance.

On 25 minutes, Edun was dismissed following an alteraction with a Northampton player and that gave Posh a mountain to climb.

On the half hour mark, Northampton doubled the lead from the spot after Oscar Wallin was penalised for a shirt tug - HOSKINS sending Steer the wrong way with the penalty.

On 40 minutes, Posh were 3-0 down as COSTELLOE tapped home from close-range after a low centre from the left.

Darren Ferguson made three changes at the break and while it did give more life in the middle of the park, only half-chances for Ricky-Jade Jones were created.

Northampton continued to threaten, Steer made a couple of important saves while Katongo cleared a second off the line from a rebound.

Substitute Tom EAVES headed home a fourth with the freedom of the penalty area afforded to him from a clipped free-kick.
