Posh Women return to winning ways in style after a comfortable victory over Wem Town.
A dominant performance from Peterborough United Women saw them return to winning ways in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands after a 6-0 victory over Wem Town Ladies at the Abbey Lawn on Sunday afternoon.
Posh got off to a perfect start when Evie Driscoll-King opened the scoring after just three minutes. A corner into the box from Rachel Lawrence was missed by the keeper and allowed Driscoll-King to tap it home at the back-post for her first-ever goal in the FA Women’s National League.
The home side continued to create more opportunities to double their lead, but none that tested the Wem keeper. The visitors' first opportunity of the afternoon came on 16 minutes as Abby Sheriff’s left-footed effort took an awkward bounce, but it was cooly caught by Nieve Corry.
The visitors began to grow into the game as Posh struggled in possession as a cross from the right-hand side caused havoc in the Posh box and looked like an opportunity for Wem to open their account for the afternoon, but Katie Doster’s effort went just wide of the post.
Dan Lawlor’s side found their second of the afternoon on 35 minutes as Keir Perkins’s lofted cross hit the inside of the post before being cleared off the line by the Wem defence, but only into the feet of Lawrence and she fired home from close-range. On 41 minutes, Posh found their third and it was Rosie Axten, netting her first goal for the club after joining last month, as Perkins’ cross was taken down by Axten and she sent a powerful effort past the keeper at the near-post.
Posh came out hungry for more in the second half, and on 54 minutes Perkins opened her account for the afternoon. A clever pass from Tara Kirk found Perkins which allowed her to advance into the box and she fired her effort past the keeper.
Just two minutes later, Perkins doubled her tally when she found herself on the receiving end of a long-ball from Jess Driscoll that set her through on-goal and she cooly slotted the ball under the on-rushing keeper and into the back of the net.
Driscoll-King should have doubled her tally on 78 minutes as Andreia Oliveria sent a low cross into the box which found the defender in acres of space, but she couldn’t direct her effort on target.
Driscoll rounded off the scoring on 81 minutes as Megan Lawlor played the ball into the midfielder, she advanced towards goal and her sublime effort from the edge of the box flew over the keeper.
The visitors did threaten to take the clean sheet away from Posh as Doster’s pass set Charlotte Budd through on-goal, but she sent her effort wide of the post.
