Posh Women County Cup

Posh Women comfortably secure their place in the Northamptonshire County Cup Semi-Finals.

Four goals from Tara Kirk, including her 50th for the club, helped guide Peterborough United Women to a 6-1 victory against Northampton Town Women Development on Sunday afternoon at Moulton College to secure a place in the Northamptonshire County Cup Semi-Finals.

It was the hosts that started the game strongly and carved the first chance of the game inside the opening two minutes but the forwards’ effort was aimed straight at Neive Corry.

Posh promptly began to control the match and opened the scoring after four minutes as KIRK guided the ball into the net from a free-kick from Jess Abrantes.

Jake Poole’s side continued to threaten with Katie Middleton curling an effort wide of the post before Rebecca Mears struck from distance into the goalkeepers’ hands.

The Cobblers saw another sight of goal on 11 minutes as Alice Timms beat Evie Driscoll-King to the ball but blazed her shot over the woodwork.

Abrantes and Kirk looked to combine again for a second goal but the latter headed her effort wide of the post.

It wasn’t long before Posh doubled their lead as Emily MELI’s cross dipped under the crossbar into the net just before the half hour mark.

On the stroke of half time, Posh grabbed a third as Emily Sharpe teed KIRK inside the box who volleyed into the net for her second of the game.

Poole made several changes at half time including defender Ellie York making her first appearance for the club since suffering an ACL injury in December 2023.

Fellow substitute Keir PERKINS got on the scoresheet less than ten minutes after her introduction as she fired into the right corner from inside the box.

On the hour mark, KIRK netted her hat-trick as an initial great save from the goalkeeper fell kindly to the number 10 who drove the ball into the bottom right corner.

Posh continued to pressure the hosts with Meg Lawlor forcing the goalkeeper into a save from a long-range strike.

The hosts netted a consolation goal on 72 minutes as a save from Corry fell invitingly for the forward who slotted in from close range.

Posh ended the scoring a minute later as KIRK pounced onto a poor pass from the back before calmly striking low into the net for her 50th goal for the club.

Renai Bennett struck from distance late on, forcing the goalkeeper to tip the ball over the woodwork as Posh comfortably eased to a quarter-final victory.

Posh Women are next in action on Sunday 23rd February as they host Solihull Moors at Abbey Lawn.
