The Posh Women scored late on to secure a vital win over Worcester City Women at the Motiq Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Peterborough United Women left it late to beat Worcester City Women 1-0 at The Motiq Stadium on Sunday afternoon in miserable conditions with a superb free-kick from Meg Lawlor the difference between the two sides.
Both teams were denied by the woodwork early on; first the crossbar stopped Worcester taking the lead from a free kick and minutes later, Keir Perkins surged through on goal, with her effort being cleared off the line. The ball then fell to Poppie Brown whose shot hit the post.
The next attempt also fell for the hosts, Tara Kirk had a shot from outside the box blocked by the defender, which then fell to Katie Middleton who forced goalkeeper Alisha Hine into a save at her near post.
Posh continued to search for an opener as Kirk did well on the right-hand side to beat the defence and found Middleton waiting on the edge of the box, but her effort was saved.
On the stroke of half time, Posh were denied by the woodwork again when Lawlor saw her powerful shot from inside the box strike the top of the crossbar.
Posh looked to make an immediate impact in the second half as captain Perkins put in a cross from the right-hand side that was caught by the wind and forced Hine into claiming the ball in the centre.
The home side were in control of the game but were still trying to find an opener, this time Kirk had a go from outside the box which was not able to test Hine.
Hayley James came close to scoring late on in the game as her shot forced Hine into a good save diving to the bottom left corner. With minutes left in the game, Kirk came close once again, she carried the ball forwards and eventually got a shot off that glanced just wide of the far post.
The breakthrough finally came in stoppage time as a free kick as LAWLOR took aim from a free-kick and found the back of the net in superb fashion with her effort crashing against the underside of the crossbar and over the line.
Posh Women complete their schedule for 2024 with an away trip to Lincoln City next Sunday at 2pm.
