O’Neill becomes Posh Women first signing of the summer.
Peterborough United Women have completed their first signing of the summer with the arrival of Alex O’Neill from Sheffield FC and she has also put pen to paper on agreeing terms for the upcoming FA Women’s National League campaign.
O’Neill has a wealth of experience in the FA Women’s National League, with previous spells at Long Eaton United, where she was voted the Manager’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season during the 2021/22 campaign, helping the club to a fourth-place finish at the time.
The defender spent last season at Sheffield FC, where she made 29 appearances in all competitions, netting 10 goals and claiming 16 assists from defence and midfield, and she is looking forward to the next chapter in her career.
“I’m very excited to have joined the club,” O’Neill said. “I can’t wait to get started. The progress behind the scenes was a key factor in signing and looks like the club is always on an upward trajectory. It’s also a proud moment to be offered terms and makes me more excited to get the season started.”
“It was a difficult decision to leave Sheffield as I have been with that group of players and staff for quite a few years now and loyalty has always been a big thing for me, but you also have to look at your own career. It was also a good season for me personally, I started the campaign as a left-back before getting moved into midfield, which was good for me to try different things.
Manager Dan Lawlor said: “Alex is a player who we have had interest in for a long time and I’m really happy to have got her on board. She’s a player who is versatile and can play in midfield or along the backline.
“She has played at this level for a number of years and I really hope we can get her to the league above. She’s committed and just wants to play football in an environment that will improve her, and I certainly believe we will do that. A really strong addition and just adds to the competition in the squad."
