Posh Women v Loughborough Lightning

Posh Women shared the points on Thursday evening with Loughborough Lightning courtesy of a late header from Hayley James at the Loughborough University Stadium in their latest FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands fixture.

The hosts struck early on as Morgan ROGERS snuck her effort into the bottom right corner past Neive Corry. Posh responded immediately as James found Ella Bale in the box but her effort ricocheted off the post. Lightning’s clearance fell to Keir Perkins but her shot was blocked.

Lightning looked to strike twice on 14 minutes as a cross to the back post was latched onto by the forward, but she failed to direct her effort under the woodwork. Zynia Delglyn collected the ball on the edge of the box minutes later but couldn’t test Corry.

Just before the half hour mark, Perkins cut inside on the left but curled her effort wide of the post. A free-kick from Meg Lawlor was the final action of the first half as her set-piece was punched off the line by Teresa Murphy.

Posh started the second half strongly as James ventured forward from her own header, but Murphy rushed off her line to claim the ball first. Corry was called into action after the hour mark as she tipped a free-kick from Lauren Purchase around the post.

On 80 minutes, substitute Katie Middleton dribbled her way into the box; she sent an inviting ball into the box but there was no Posh player on the end to connect.

Substitutes Tara Kirk and Lauren Wilshaw combined on the left; the latter found Middleton at the front post but her close-range effort was deflected wide. Wilshaw saw her corner rebound off the crossbar late on.

Posh found an equaliser on 89 minutes as Wilshaw’s corner was met by JAMES to level the scoring. Lightning looked to retake the lead immediately but Marthina Aguirre cleared off the line to keep the scores level.

Posh Women are next in action on Sunday afternoon as they face Northampton Town Development in the Northamptonshire County Cup Quarter-Finals.
