Posh Women condemned to defeat in their first pre-season game despite a hard-fought performance.
Peterborough United Women fought hard against higher-opposition Wolverhampton Wanderers, but fell to a 3-0 defeat in their opening game of pre-season at the Abbey Lawn on Sunday afternoon.
It was our opponents who started the game brightly and nearly took the lead inside the first minute as a diagonal ball played forward was latched onto her by the right winger and she dragged her shot just wide of the post.
A poor back pass led them onto the attack once again, but the Wolves attacker could not convert her sliding shot. The visitors had the ball in the back of the net on two consecutive occasions inside ten minutes, but the attackers were flagged offside.
Posh began to grow into the game after, entering the final third on a few occasions but not creating any distinct chances. Posh’s first opportunity fell on 28 minutes as Evie Driscoll-King’s dragged the ball back to Jess Driscoll, whose shot was on target but blocked by the Wolves defence. Wolves Women quickly grew in confidence again and took the lead on 30 minutes as their forward fired past the diving Neive Corry.
Posh started the second half brightly and almost equalised on 46 minutes as Poppy Brown’s good footwork allowed her to play substitute Keir Perkins through on goal, only for her low shot to be diverted away by the goalkeeper.
The subsequent corner was met by the head of fellow substitute Jess Evans, but could not get enough power to danger the goalkeeper. Wolves continued to cause trouble for the Posh defence, with the midfielder dribbling past the Posh centre-backs but dragging her shot wide on 50 minutes.
Perkins raced through once again minutes later as Ellie York’s diagonal cross played havoc for the Wolves defence, but Perkin’s shot was well saved by the goalkeeper. Wolverhampton Wanderers doubled their advantage on 74 minutes as their forward was advanced towards goal and safely dispatched her shot past Corry. Posh continued to battle hard in the final moments, but Wolves secured the win with a third goal on 90 minutes.
