Women v Wolves

Posh Women suffer defeat in their latest pre-season fixture despite a hard-fought performance against Tier 3 side.

Peterborough United Women fought hard against higher-opposition Wolverhampton Wanderers, but fell to a 3-1 defeat in their first pre-season game at Abbey Lawn on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors started strong but were denied multiple chances thanks to Corry and new signing, Sharpe. Posh soon settled into the challenge leaving Middleton to make an excellent cross that was just tipped over the crossbar.

On 12 minutes, Lawlor’s corner ball found BENNETT at the far post who headed home and put Posh ahead.

Both sides continued to perform well before George headed the equaliser for Wolves from close range from a deflection off the crossbar. The visitors tested Corry once again, but Hughes’ header hit the woodwork from a corner.

On 35 minutes Posh thought they had taken the lead but despite Lawlor’s corner finding another way in at the far post, the referee denied their efforts and awarded a free kick to Wolves.

A few minutes into the second half, the visitors took the lead from a corner ball, before Hughes netted their third and final goal on 59 minutes.

Both new and old faces continued to compete well at each end of the field, including some excellent blocks by Corry and a solo effort from Bale that skimmed just over the bar.

Posh worked hard until the final whistle where Brown’s last minute effort was saved by the keeper.

Both sides benefited from a good workout as they continue to prepare for the 2024/25 season which gets underway at the end of August.
