Posh Women V Leafield Athletic

Posh Women suffer last gasp defeat to fellow promotion contenders.

Peterborough United Women fell to their first FA Women’s National League defeat of the season as a late strike in stoppage time secured all three points for Leafield Athletic at the Castle Vale Stadium.

Posh came out the starting blocks well as Katie Middleton cut in on the right into space, but her effort ricocheted off the crossbar and post before eventually being claimed by Bell. Middleton continued to enjoy space on the right as she fired a low cross towards Perkins, but the hosts’ defence made a crucial block.

Debutant Kayleigh Hines connected onto Middleton’s low corner at the front post but the angle was too tight to hit the target. The hosts began to grow into the game as Shirley capitalised on a mistake from Posh but the defence recovered well.

Just after the half hour mark, Leafield took the lead as COWIE’s corner went directly into the back of the net. Jake Poole’s side responded as Middleton struck from the edge of the area forcing Bell to tip her effort over the crossbar.

Hines headed a corner straight at Bell before Neive Corry punched a free-kick away on the goal-line. Posh started the second half strongly as Ella-Mai Bale advanced but she couldn’t keep her shot down.Hines rose strong again from Lawlor’s corner but couldn’t divert on target.

On 75 minutes, substitute Tara KIRK equalised for the Posh as she fired into the top right corner from the edge of the box. Posh immediately looked to take the lead as substitute Hayley James drove forward but could only direct her effort at Bell.

James continued to be involved in the action as she delivered a cross towards the back post but Renai Bennett was inches away from connecting.

Deep into stoppage time, Leafield took the lead as HEMANS fired past Corry.

Posh Women are back in action next Sunday as they host local rivals Northampton Town in their latest FAWNL Division One Midlands fixture.
