A first-half strike from captain Keir Perkins secured Posh Women three points on the road at Lincoln United on Sunday afternoon in their latest FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands fixture.
It was a tight contest from the first whistle with the hosts carving the first chance of the game on 12 minutes as Lucy Farrow had beaten the offside trap, she fired across the face of the goal but no one in white could latch on.
Posh responded with a long throw-in from Niamh Connor which fell kindly to Niamh Reynolds but her effort rose above the crossbar. On 18 minutes, Meg Lawlor’s corner was met by Hayley James but the defender couldn’t direct her header on target.
Perkins fired into the side netting on 21 minutes before Betsy Thomas’ long-range shot was easily collected by Neive Corry.
Just after the half hour mark, Posh thought they’d taken the lead as Evie Driscoll-King’s cross was headed in at the far post by Reynolds but the Assistant Referee flagged for offside. Posh had the ball in the back of the net five minutes later as a quick corner was fed into the box by Poppie Brown to find Tara Kirk who slotted in from close-range, only for the Assistant Referee to call for offside once again.
On the stroke of half-time, Jake Poole’s side eventually broke the deadlock as PERKINS cut inside on the right before curling an effort into the top right corner.
After the restart, some great footwork from Lauren Wilshaw set her free at goal but her effort was safely collected by Gray.
Just after the hour mark, Corry was forced into action when a Lincoln corner looked set to curl over the line but the Posh shot-stopper punched the ball away. On 69 minutes, Farrow advanced through on goal but Corry rushed out to clear the danger away.
With 15 minutes left, a Posh corner found Driscoll-King who fired an effort at goal which was cleared off the line by the hosts. Farrow advanced forward once again for the hosts but substitute Emily Sharpe recovered well before the Whites’ attacker could strike at goal.
Substitute Marthina Aguirre’s diagonal ball was latched onto by Reynolds but her effort fired inches over the crossbar. Jake Poole’s side withstood pressure in the closing minutes from the hosts to clinch three points on the road.
Peterborough United Women are next in action on Sunday 6th April (2pm) as they host Leafield Athletic in their final home game of the season.
