Notts County Reserves V Posh Women U23s

Posh Women Under 23s secure win over the Magpies.

Peterborough United Women Under 23s picked up their first away win of the season, after a 2-0 victory over Notts County Women Development at Digby Street on Sunday afternoon in the FA Women’s National League Reserves Midlands Division, courtesy of goals from Elle Ford and Lola Cook.

Posh saw their first opportunity of the match on 10 minutes as Alice Akinyemi struck the crossbar following a breakaway on the right.

In a half of few chances, Posh came close again on the stroke of half-time as Georgie Oliver cut into the box forcing the Magpies goalkeeper into a save, before failing to hit the target with the rebound.

The hosts carved the first chance of the second-half but failed to test Grace Smith. Posh made the breakthrough on 66 minutes, as the ball fell to substitute Elle FORD inside the box, where she calmly slotted into the net.

Allsebrook’s side doubled their lead on 74 minutes as a free-kick ricocheted off the crossbar kindly to substitute Lola COOK who fired the ball into the net from yards out.

Posh looked to extend their advantage late on as Oliver picked out Phoebe Richards-Reeves inside the box but the full-back couldn’t find the target.

Manager Michael Allesbrook said: “It was a tough 90 minutes, the pitch was not very helpful at all and it was a really tight and scrappy game, the pitch sort of made it that way and didn’t allow for a lot of free-flowing football. I thought we were the best side across the 90 minutes and to be fair to them, they battled well and made it difficult for us. Ultimately, we got a couple of goals, we got confidence in the game and deserved the win.

“It was a great finish from Elle, we know how much quality she’s got but it opened the game up a little bit, it was a really 50-50 game particularly in midfield, we felt after the goal they had to come out a little bit and that gave us more space to play in. The girls have worked so hard this year for an away win, we haven’t quite got one, we’ve always been tight in the game, so to hold on, it made a massive difference.

“Alicia and Evie played centre half today, Chloe and Faith have done a brilliant job this year, it was nice to see them play together again, they’re great players and they read the game really well. Grace has made a couple of good saves, not had too much to do, but ultimately, overall, the clean sheets come from everyone doing their job and they all deserved a clean sheet.”

Posh: Smith, Richard-Reeves, Riley, Podd, Oliver, Mears, Smith, Moore (sub Ford, 64 min), Akinyemi (sub Cook, 71min), Osker, Cooper.
