Women U23s

Posh Women Under 23s continue their run of good form with a 3-1 victory over Sporting Khalsa Reserves.

Peterborough United Women Under 23s are now four games unbeaten after securing a 3-1 victory over Sporting Khalsa Reserves on Sunday afternoon at the idverde Training Ground, with Rebecca Mears, Jess Abrantes and Alice Akinyemi on the scoresheet.

The Under 23s took the lead on 22 minutes as Georgie Oliver’s dribble into the box was cleared to MEARS on the edge of the box who curled a first time effort into the top left corner. The lead didn’t last long as the visitors equalised minutes after as the visitors advanced forward from a throw-in before unleashing an effort into the top left corner, leaving Dellar no chance.

Posh started the second half strongly and regained the lead five minutes after the restart as a diagonal ball by Tilly Sands was met on the volley by ABRANTES who fired into the net at the second time of asking.

The Under 23s secured the three points with a third goal on the stroke of the final whistle as Bronte Cooper played the ball forward to AKINYEMI; she cut into the box before firing a shot into the back of the net from an acute angle.

Manager Michael Allsebrook said: “It was a really gritty performance. Fair play to Khalsa, who turned up with a clear game plan and made it difficult at times. They were physically bigger than us and looked to threaten in behind but we dealt with their threat well and it shows how much progress we have made defensively over recent weeks. For that I am so proud of the players.

“We felt like we played well throughout the game and deserved the three points on the day. We have put together a good run of results recently and you can see the confidence and togetherness throughout the squad. The players are working incredibly hard and the recent results have been thoroughly deserved. We cannot rest on our laurels; we go into a tough game next week against Sutton Coldfield knowing that we will have to be at our very best once again to get a result.

“We were delighted to give Chloe (Biggadike) an opportunity as she stepped up from the under 16s to make her debut. She played well and would have learned a lot from the experience playing against a physical team. There has been so much success in the pathway so far this season with academy players making first team appearances and now the first crop of this year’s Under 16s are beginning to come through and be ready to make their mark at Under 23 level.”
