Members of a girls’ football team enjoyed a taste of life as a professional footballer after winning a training session with the management team of Peterborough United – thanks to one of the UK’s leading builders merchants.
Stanground Sports under 14 girls claimed the prize in a special competition run by Peterborough United’s club partners Selco Builders Warehouse, which has a branch on Padholme Road East.
Stanground Sports, who play in the Alan Boswell Cambridgeshire Girls and Women’s Football League, also won 20 tickets to a League One game at the Weston Homes Stadium and a new kit for the 2023-24 season.
Kieran Scarff – assistant to Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson - and academy manager Dan Robinson hosted the training session at the club’s Category Two status Idverde Training Ground.
Kieran said: “It was brilliant to welcome the girls from Stanground Sports down to our training ground and I only hope they enjoyed it as much as we did.
“To see youngsters out playing the game is what grassroots football is all about and I’ve got huge respect for the coaches who give their time freely to help teams such as this grow and develop.
“Women’s and girls football is thriving and it was fantastic to give something back by providing the team with a training session.
“There were some talented players on show but our big priority was to make sure the girls enjoyed it and we now hope they can go on to have a really strong season.”
The Selco competition was open to any boys or girls team playing in a recognised league at any age group between under eights and under 15s in and around Peterborough.
Steven Conkey, manager of Stanground Sports, said: “We were thrilled to win the prize and the girls have been given a wonderful experience.
“Kieran and Dan got really involved in the session and it was fantastic for the team to have the chance to train at a brilliant facility and learn from some top coaches.
“We can’t thank Selco enough for running the competition and giving us the chance to have an experience that will live in the memory for a long time to come.
“To win tickets to a Peterborough United match and a new strip really was the icing on the cake.”
