Joe Davies’ leveller served as consolation as a Dominic Weston brace ensured all three points for Sheffield Wednesday, who returned to winning ways on Saturday afternoon.
Davies continued his rich vein of form as his effort cancelled out Weston’s early opener, but the Wednesday man would find the back of the net again in the second period to ensure Posh would leave South Yorkshire empty-handed.
The result came against the backdrop of three absentees; Ben Westcott and captain Andre Changunda missed out while Max Beech didn’t travel with the squad as expected.
That said, Jimmy Unwin named three changes to the side that lined up against Sheffield United last weekend.
Bolu Shofowoke, Benji McWilliams-Marcano and Rylie Fitzpatrick made way for George Holley, Joe Davies and Lucca Mendonca.
It was the hosts who looked most threatening in the early exchanges: their pressure was rewarded on eight minutes when WESTON looped his header over Ignas Sakalas in the Posh net.
Posh responded well to falling behind and squared the contest when DAVIES capitalised on a loose ball to the host’s defence, shifting the ball onto his left-foot and picking out the bottom corner.
It was Davies who looked to breach the Wednesday backline once more as the ball was well-worked to the number seven who looked to provide a similar finish to his first.
Sutura Kakay let fly on 38 minutes, but Sakalas was equal to the midfielder’s effort from 20-yards. Posh went into the break level on terms, but almost fell behind shortly after the restart when Ari-Jae Shaw squandered an opportunity.
On 50 minutes, Wednesday passed up an opportunity to put themselves in front when Holley cleared the ball from the goalline before Weston struck the woodwork with a driven effort.
A minute later and Posh thought they had the lead, Shofowoke rounded Logan Stretch but couldn’t turn the ball into an open net. Short of an hour and Sakalas was called into action to deny Wednesday the lead at full stretch.
The hosts were back in front on 71 minutes when WESTON was teed up for a simple finish and his second of the afternoon.
Sykut cut open the Wednesday backline late on but couldn’t keep his effort down when time was of the essence.
Wednesday controlled the final moments well and held on to secure all three points in South Yorkshire.
