Cian Hayes in action

The Posh Under 21s returned to winning ways with a comfortable success over Wigan Athletic on Tuesday afternoon.

Peterborough United Under 21s bounced back from three successive defeats to secure a comfortable 3-0 victory over Wigan Athletic at the idverde Training Ground with Harley Mills, Cian Hayes and Ma'Kel Campbell on target.

Posh were quick out the blocks causing trouble for Wigan and in only the second minute of the game, Hayes was felled inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. This allowed MILLS to smash the ball straight down the middle of the goal from 12-yards to give his side an early lead.

After the opening goal, it was Posh who continued to apply pressure, and they almost doubled the lead on seven minutes when Abraham Odoh weaved past the defender in the box and squared for Mills who saw his shot saved by the keeper.

A quiet end to the second half saw Posh go into the break a goal to the good, however it was Wigan who went close early in the second half after chaos in the box allowed the ball to fall to Tom Costello, but he fluffed his lines and fired over.

The away side would be left to rue that missed chance as on  65 minutes HAYES doubled Posh’s advantage with a well-placed finish after excellent work from David Kamara down the right-hand side.

Posh continued to look to add to their lead and an unbelievable show of strength from substitute Pemi Aderoju saw him spark a counter-attack for Posh but his effort was deflected past the keeper and onto the post.

Eventually, Posh did make it three late on with a brilliantly hit effort from distance by Ma’Kel CAMPBELL which nestled into the bottom corner.

Following the game Lead Development Coach Ryan Semple said: “It was a good performance overall for sure, three goals scored and a deserved clean sheet.  I think in the first half we made a positive start, but we had to tweak a few things at the break to get overall control in the contest."

Next Tuesday, Posh Under 21s are back in action as they host Fleetwood Town at the idverde Training Ground.

Posh: Blackmore, Rose, Nevett, Osagie, Mills, Campbell, Young, Odoh, Ajiboye, Hayes, Ihionvien. Subs: Smith, Aitkins, Fitzpatrick, Kamara, Aderoju.
